![]() ![]() We're lousy with middling, worthy writers but, tragically, you can count on one hand the Australian writers who earn a living writing books. Stow had to work as a barman in his retirement and Lawson begged in the streets. All the great Australian writers are dead and under-appreciated: Patrick White, Christina Stead, Randolph Stow, Henry Lawson. They'll miss the friend that a book can be. They'll miss the thrill of a book - the look, the feel and the often timeless, essential vision within. I offered to give a book prize to a school and was told: "Young people don't read hardcover books anymore. Well, they're not going anywhere and neither am I so I have a lot to look forward to. I'm tripping over piles of books and even my Kindle e-reader is chockers with books waiting to be read. ![]() There are so many I'm waiting to read but I'm distracted by new ones. I probably have enough books to see me out. ![]()
